Suicide and self-harm are serious health issues around the world, especially in low and middle-income countries like Pakistan. Young people with autism are at higher risk, often facing challenges like anxiety, depression, and stigma. Many also struggle to get the right kind of support. The CARE Project [OAR2023A07] is working to change that. Funded by the Organization for Autism Research (OAR), this study is testing a programme called YCMAP (Youth Culturally Adapted Manual-Assisted Psychological Intervention). It
is adapted for young people with autism in Pakistan, aged 14–24, to help them cope with difficult feelings and reduce the risk of self-harm or suicide.
This builds on a completed successful Y-CMAP study with neurotypical young adults, and now has been carefully adapted to suit the needs of young adults with autism. It includes 8–10 therapy sessions over three months, provided
by trained professionals. The programme is being tested in a research study across eight major cities in Pakistan, where participants either receive YCMAP along with regular care or just regular care alone.
Although the study is still in progress, it is already seen as an important step toward supporting this group in Pakistan. Experts estimate that over 350,000 people in Pakistan are diagnosed with autism, but the real number is likely much higher due to underdiagnosis and limited awareness.
By focusing on culturally relevant support for mental health, the CARE Project is helping to shine a light on a group that is often overlooked. It offers hope for better understanding, early support, and more compassionate care for young people with autism in Pakistan.
