Bipolar disorder affects 40 million people worldwide, with a significant disease burden attributed to low- and middle income countries (LMICs). It is a highly recurrent condition, with poor recovery between episodes of illness. Onset is
usually in early adult life and over a lifetime bipolar disorder is associated with significant psychosocial impairment and economic costs. There is minimal access to psychological and medical treatments for mental health problems in Pakistan.  Evidence suggests that psychoeducation is an effective adjunctive treatment option in bipolar disorder which includes providing the patient and
family with information about the nature of the illness, its treatments and key coping strategies.

Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is leading a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR)-funded study on the Culturally adapted PsychoEducation Programme
(CaPE) for adults with bipolar disorder. The programme is being conducted in eight centers across Pakistan including Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Hyderabad, Shaheed Benazir Abad, and Quetta.
