PROF. NUSRAT HUSAIN

Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Research Global Mental Health at the University of Manchester, and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist and Director of Research & Innovation

Dr. Nusrat Husain is a Professor of Psychiatry and Director of Research in Global Mental Health
at the University of Manchester, as well as an honorary consultant psychiatrist and Director of
Research & Innovation at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. He also leads the Global Centre
for Research on Mental Health Inequalities. His research focuses on closing the mental health
treatment gap in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and addressing disparities among
ethnic minorities in high-income nations. With a multidisciplinary approach, Nusrat fosters
international collaborations aimed at developing locally informed solutions to global mental
health challenges.
His work spans a range of applied research programs aimed at reducing self-harm, preventing
suicide, and tackling mental health inequalities across all age groups, improving both outcomes
and access to services. Nusrat is a strong advocate for patient and public involvement (PPIE) in all aspects of his research and clinical practice. He leads global research in culturally adapted psychosocial therapies and innovative pharmacological treatments for mental illness. Examples include studies invited by the Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI) on methotrexate in schizophrenia and simvastatin in bipolar depression and a Grand Challenges Canada (GCC) program for scaling up the parenting intervention Learning Through Play about parental depression. His work also includes some of the world’s largest therapist-delivered suicide prevention trials.
Nusrat is the current President of the Manchester Medical Society and has served as a trustee for organizations such as the Manchester Global Foundation, Abaseen Foundation UK, and Lancashire Mind. He remains an academic consultant with the Center in Africa for Learning and Living (CALL) and is an executive member of the academic faculty at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Additionally, Nusrat is a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator.
